About This AttractionSuggest an Edit

This area was once one of the largest fortified areas in England overlooking the North Sea and River Tyne. There's over 2000 years worth of history to be discovered and beautiful views to admire. There's the fantastic 'Life in the Stronghold' exhibition, which tells the story of the site from its original beginnings as an Anglo-Saxon settlement, to an Anglican monastery, a royal castle, artillery fort and a coastal defence. There is plenty for the family to explore including the modifications that were made in the First and Second World Wars.
